How to track App Store rankings without reading the chart wrong.
A useful ranking workflow distinguishes category from overall charts, keeps countries separate, preserves historical evidence, and alerts only when a movement is worth acting on.
What an App Store ranking actually represents
An App Store chart rank is an observed position inside a specific chart, storefront, price type, and moment in time. “#20” is incomplete unless you also know whether it means Books in France, overall Top Free in the United States, or another scope entirely.
Chart ranking is also different from keyword ranking. Category and overall charts show chart placement; keyword tools measure where an app appears for a search term. RankMemo focuses on category and overall chart movement.
Separate category rank from overall rank
Start with the app’s primary category. That is where most independent apps can reach a meaningful position. Track Top Free or Top Paid separately as a broader, harder milestone.
Choose storefronts intentionally
App Store charts vary by country. Follow the markets where you launched, localised the listing, ran campaigns, or already have users. Never average those ranks into one number.
Record time, source, and coverage
A position without its timestamp and chart depth is ambiguous. Save when it was observed, which public source produced it, and whether the source succeeded.
Compare trends, not isolated readings
One reading can be delayed or unusual. Use repeated observations to confirm rapid changes, and compare the latest position with a consistent 24-hour or seven-day baseline.
Alert on decisions, summarise the rest
Use immediate alerts for entries, milestones, and confirmed fast climbs. Put routine movement into a daily digest so important signals do not get buried in notification noise.
A reliable minimum setup
- The app’s name or public App Store URL
- Its primary category and free or paid status
- At least one relevant storefront
- A consistent collection cadence
- A separate category and overall timeline
- A daily summary plus event-based alerts
Start with the decision you want the data to support
For a launch, watch rapid movement and new-country entries. For an established app, focus on milestones and sustained trend changes. For a portfolio, use one daily memo to scan every followed app before opening the detailed timeline.
